Middletown will soon have three breweries once again, as Gravel Road Brewing Company is planning to take over the building that formerly housed Rolling Mill Brewing Company.
Gravel Road is owned and operated by Carillon Brewing Co. head brewer Dan Lauro. Located in Dayton’s Carillon Historic Park, Carillon brewing uses 1850s brewing techniques to create a unique brewing experience.
The owners are currently working to get the brewery ready to reopen, including things like painting and updating the brewing equipment.
The brewery is brewing test batches while they wait for their official license to open as a brewery, including classic styles like cream ale, Kentucky common, and American pale ale. They’re currently open on weekends through the end of July.
The Rolling Mill brand is expected to live on, as Gravel Road is expected to brew and serve their gluten-free beers for the Middletown market, at least for the near future. Rolling Mill opened in 2017 and resisted a buyout attempt from the Hollywoodland development in 2021 before ultimately closing in September 2022.
The name Gravel Road comes from Lauro’s background growing up in Northwest Ohio where his childhood home had a gravel road. The name is in honor of Dan’s father.
Middletown’s NEW Ales Brewing also recently relocated to a larger building, where they will eventually be joined by Steel City Pizza. FigLeaf Brewing Co. is also located in Middletown.
