Fifty West Brewing Company opened their brewpub on the east side of Cincinnati in Columbia Township in 2012, and they’re unique in that they opened a production facility/taproom across the street from their original taproom in 2016. The Fifty West Production Works has much more room, sand volleyball, canoe rental, a bicycle shop, and a whole bunch of other fun outdoorsy things.

One of the interesting things that I learned about Fifty West is that all of their beers are named after something to do with bicycling or transportation in general. Their new taproom feels open and industrial, while the original one (in a former funeral home) is more quaint, darker, and quiet. Both are solid options depending on what you’re looking for. They also both have food, which is always a plus, and Pro Works is dog-friendly on the outside. In 2018 they ramped up production and distribution with new cans, moving them from an east side cult favorite to major player in Cincinnati. In 2018, Fifty West was named as one of the fifty fastest-growing breweries in the U.S. by the Brewers Association.

The original brewpub location became an event-only space in 2023, although the Burger Bar/Production Works space across the street remains open to the public.

In 2024, a candy company called the Sunshine Caramel Co. opened on the property.

Burger Bar

They continued their expansion into 2020, opening Fifty West Burger Bar in the former Pizzelli location adjacent to Production Works. In 2020 they also opened a new location in Chillicothe. After being closed for more than two years, the original brewpub reopened in 2023 after a refresh with a new menu.

District at Deerfield

In 2023, Fifty West announced a new location as part of the District at Deerfield location in Deerfield Twp in Cincinnati’s northern suburbs. The location is expected to be open by 2024.

Must-try beer: 10 & 2 (Barleywine) – If you haven’t tried Fifty West’s award-winning barleywine, then you should kick yourself in the pants. It’s won gold at both the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, and with the recent resurgence of this style, I’m not sure how this one doesn’t get more hype. The description perfectly describes what this “sticky and strong malt” beer is, but be careful because as the name implies, it comes in at a hefty 10.2% ABV.

Other great beers: Punch You in the EyePA (Imperial IPA), Doom Pedal (wheat beer), Going Plaid (scotch ale)
