Third Eye, Madtree, Cartridge, Streetside win big at Ohio Craft Brewer’s Cup

The 2022 Ohio Craft Brewer’s Cup took place in Dayton over the weekend, and Cincinnati-area breweries were once again big winners at the competition.

MadTree took home the award for best large brewery, featuring breweries that produce over 15,000 barrels per year. Third Eye won best Southwest Ohio brewery, on the strength of five medals – two gold and three bronze.

Third Eye led Southwest Ohio breweries with five total medals, including a pair of golds. Twisted Pretzel German Pretzel Ale and Untapped Potential both won gold. It’s the third straight gold at the competition for Untapped Potential, which won Best of Show in 2021. Higher Purpose, their stout that has won medals at both GABF and the US Open, took home a bronze.

Madtree won both the gold and silver in the Imperial IPA category, with Cryo High taking gold and Phantom Forest winning silver.

Maineville’s Cartridge Brewing won four total medals, including a gold medal in the category with the most entries, European Lager. Their Up the Hill Munich Helles won the category that had 62 entries, almost double the next biggest category, New England/Hazy IPA, which had 34. Cartridge also won a gold medal in the Herb/Spice/Pepper Beer category with Hollow Point, their Hibiscus Ale.

Brink‘s Moozie added another medal to is long list of awards, as it won silver in the Stout category. The beer has won multiple times at both GABF and the US Open. Brink also took home gold in the American Light Ale category for Jackpot Joey, a golden ale.

Narrow Path won a couple of silvers in European style categories: German Ale (Restless Seas) and European Pale Ale (Tire Patch). Fresh off of winning a silver medal at GABF, Sonder‘s Kato won a bronze medal in the Coffee Beer category, which had a robust 26 entries. Rhinegeist won a pair of medals for very different beers: gold for Rye Night Whale in Wood/Barrel-Aged Beer over 8% and silver for Cheetah in the American Lager category.

Streetside took home a silver and three bronze medals, and they interestingly won for a pair of beers that serve a higher purpose: All Together (brewed to support hospitality professionals) and Black is Beautiful (brewed to raise awareness of the injustices people of color face).

In all, eight Southwest Ohio breweries won a total of 22 medals, including seven gold. Best in Show went to Lost Leatherman English Mild, brewed by Derive Brewing in Columbus. A full list of Southwest Ohio area winners is below:
