There were no MMA events in the Ohio Valley region this past weekend, but that doesn’t mean that there still wasn’t news to be had from the area. Many fighters were in action outside of the region, including Cleveland native Jessica Eye, who competed at UFC 192 in Houston, Texas.
Check out a recap of all of the news and action from this past weekend.
Eye comes up short
Jessica Eye (11-4) was fighting to stay in title contention in the women’s bantamweight division at UFC 192, but unfortunately she came up short in her main card bout against Julianna Pena (7-2). Pena clearly had a game plan to get the fight to the ground against the striker Eye, and she did so early and often en route to a trio of 29-27 scores from the judges.
Eye seemed to briefly turn the tide in the second round, nearly securing an arm triangle choke before she was deducted a point after landing an illegal knee. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough for the “Evil” one to come away with the victory, and she has now dropped back-to-back fights in the UFC.
Eye is now officially just 1-3 in the UFC with a no contest after her victory over Sarah Kaufman was overturned. She’s likely safe from a UFC pink slip for the time being due to the lack of depth in the women’s bantamweight division, but her next bout will be pivotal if she wants to keep her job.
Gabelman wins in VA
Cincinnati native Cody Gabelman (4-2) is already six fights into his pro career despite being just 21 years old, and he picked up his fourth win as he took home a unanimous decision over Martin Davila (2-1) at Strike Off 6 in Virginia over the weekend.
Gabelman was able to earn a unanimous decision over Davila, taking home scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 from the judges. It was the first decision win of his career for the flyweight fighter, who rebounded from a decision loss in his last outing in August.
CDMMA 12 canceled
In what seems to be an ever-growing epidimic, the Complete Devastation MMA 12 card that was scheduled to take place in Altoona, Pennsylvania over the weekend was canceled. The cancellation was extremely last-minute, as many fighters who were traveling from out of town had already shown up in Central Pennsylvania before learning that they would not be fighting on Saturday night.
The cancellation was apparently due to the fact that many of the scheduled fighters did not complete their medicals in time to be cleared to fight.
Many Ohio Valley fighters were scheduled to compete at the event, including Ohio native Josh Robinson who was to take on Charlie Gathers in the main event. Gathers has already rebounded, as he will take on Alfred Leisure in the main event later this month at IT Fight Series 37 in Columbus, Ohio. Michael Cockerham was also slated to take on Lewis Rumsey at the canceled event.
