A welterweight battle pitting two fighters with their eyes on the UFC will headline Duneland Classic IX this Friday in La Porte, Indiana, as local favorite Dustin Pape (7-2) is set to take on Michigan’s DeQuan Townsend (12-3) at 170 pounds.
The 24-year-old Pape, who made his pro debut at just 20, looks for his third straight win in what will be his fourth fight of 2015.
“It will be a pretty tough fight, but the fight I need to get in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships), which is where I want to go,” Pape told The Michigan City News-Dispatch. “A breakthrough fight.”
A regular training partner of UFC veteran Keith Wisniewski and current UFC welterweight contender Matt Brown, Pape has turned in back-to-back stoppage wins after a posting four straight decision wins before dropping a bout to Kenneth Glenn in February.
Now Pape will face the 29-year-old Townsend, an XFC veteran who has reeled off five straight wins and has won eight of his last nine. The lanky fighter is unorthodox and is known as a striker, as nine of his twelve wins have come via knockout or TKO.
A total of ten bouts are scheduled for the event, including four in the pro ranks. Duneland Classic IX takes place at the La Porte Civic Auditorium in La Porte, Indiana.
