Typically the suburban wasteland isn’t somewhere you’d expect to see a solid craft brewery pop up, but that’s exactly what Mason has in the new 16 Lots Brewing Co.
16 Lots opened in September 2017, with a small list of beer options and pizza available inside the taproom from Mad Monks.
Admittedly, it took Angie and I a little bit to finally hit up 16 Lots, in part because Mason is quite a haul for us and the fact that we’ve been underwhelmed by some of the newer suburban breweries that have opened up.
But we were pleasantly surprised by what 16 Lots had to offer. Although they opened with pretty basic options for beer – a pilsner, a wheat beer, an IPA, etc. – they’ve quietly added to their tap list with some seasonal offerings. We tried their Mason Klaus winter ale and their Oktoberfest and both were solid. We also tried the Pike Street (formerly known as War Horse) IPA, and the Muddy Creek Oatmeal Stout.
The IPA was pretty fruity and not overly hoppy, a decent take on the style. I liked the Oktoberfest the most, partly because I like the Marzen style. But it was November so drinking an Oktoberfest beer felt a little odd.
The space is big and vast, at over 6,000 square feet with a giant shuffleboard, dart boards, a big bar, and plenty of table seating. The whole place has sort of a ‘rustic chic’ style and reminds me of something Chip and Joanna Gaines would create if they decided to design a bar on “Fixer Upper.”
It’s definitely cool to see Mason finally get a brewery and it appears as though the residents there are enjoying it because the place was packed on the night we visited.
