Weekend Preview: Slow week in the Ohio Valley

Weekend Preview

If you want to see some Local MMA this week, then you’ll have to travel to Peru. No, not that Peru. It’s Peru, Indiana, which is apparently the circus captital of the world. B.J. Penn is also from Peru. No, not that B.J. Penn. It’s the one who briefly served as the United States Secretary of the Navy in 2009.

Anyway, it’s a slow weekend, so it could be one last chance to get outside and do stuff before you have to pull that sweater out of storage. Or if that’s less your speed, you can always check out the multitude of MMA on TV this weekend, including a pair of UFC events on Saturday.

Here’s the slate for this weekend.

Aug 23 – Supreme Cage Fighting (Peru, IN)
As previously noted, this amateur event takes place on Saturday night in Peru, Indiana. The main event features unbeaten SCF lightweight champ  Kevin Backus (4-0) putting his perfect record on the line against Jeramiah Hoffman (2-2). Backus has finished all four of his victories via choke in the first round, and he looks to make it 5-for-5 against Hoffman, who is coming off of a KO victory from the last SCF event in March.

Unfortunately for this event, an intriguing heavyweight bout that was supposed to take place has changed. LaSalle Jackson (2-3) was originally slated to take on Branden Myers (8-3) in a rematch for the heavyweight title, but now he’ll take on Joshua Cade (1-1) for the title instead.

Other notables on the card include light heavyweight Nick Miller (3-0) and super heavyweight Bradley Scott (2-0), and the event also includes a women’s bout featuring Destinee Graves (1-1) vs. Atiya Shorter (0-1).

TV Fights
Since things are slow around these parts, this weekend may be a good opportunity to indulge yourself in the MMA overload that will be taking place all across the globe. If you like that “regional” feel, then you may want to check out either Titan FC 29 (10 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network) or RFA 17 (10 p.m. ET, AXS TV). As a bonus, the RFA event will be the first-ever sanctioned MMA event in South Dakota, and will also feature Tennessee native Luke Sanders (7-0), who could be just a few steps away from the UFC, in a featherweight title eliminator.

Be sure to check return to BluegrassMMA.com early next week for full results from all of this weekend’s action.
