Rolling Mill Brewing Company
916 1st Ave, Middletown
Rolling Mill, located in Middletown, is unique in that it is the Greater Cincinnati’s only completely gluten-free brewery. The idea of the brewery started about a decade ago when founder Josh Laubach was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and became gluten-free himself. He and his wife began researching a way to brew beer without traditional grains, and they opened the brewery in 2017. Instead of sorghum which is typically used in gluten-free beers, they use rice, millet, and buckwheat to brew their beers.
The couple are also Middletown natives and hope that their local business can help bring back some of the vibrant industry that helped build the once-booming town. The taproom itself is located inside of their historic industrial building. The small bar is nuzzled in a corner with exposed brewing equipment. They have a decidedly industrial feel with lots of wood and metal.
Must-try beer: Two Goldens (light lager) – In a blue collar town like Middletown, Rolling Mill has decided to focus on classic beer styles that are familiar to most Americans, and Two Goldens has been their flagship beer since day one. It’s very light at 4.2% with almost no hop aroma.
Other great beers: 10-09 Pilsner, Ingot Brown Ale
